Velvet Furniture
Velvet is often associated with regality and royalty, giving off the flair of sophistication with its sleek, shiny, textured surface. Traditionally made from cotton or silk, velvet is specially weaved and brushed to provide the soft touch and sheen of the finish. In light of environmental sustainability and high demand, synthetic velvets made from polyester have also become popular in the market. Unlike traditional silk or even cotton velvet, these modern types of velvet are much more durable and stain resistant, making it a popular choice for households with kids or pets.
With its dark and classy shades, velvet furniture adds an air of regality and mysteriousness to the room. These bold pieces of material are mostly made into larger everyday furniture such as sofas or couches, and often become signature pieces to the room and household.
Velvet sofas and cushions are the most popular velvet furniture and accessories for its versatility in pairing and size. A unique quality of velvet is its ability to be a lighter or darker shade when brushed in different directions, and when light is shone, creating its signature shiny sheen. This quality creates a new material design on the furniture each time it is touched.
Due to its polyester makeup, synthetic velvet ensures liquids do not penetrate far into the pile, making them easier to remove. However, as with any other sofa, stains and spots should still be blotted and dealt with immediately, to prevent any potential unforeseen damages. Steam is a very useful tool for removing older stains, but make sure that the device you’re using is on a low setting, and don’t forget to protect the fabric using a cloth. If the stain is still not coming out, then you may be able to enlist the help of a specialist upholstery cleaning professional.
However, just because true velvet has a reputation for being hard to clean, given the advancements in cleaning products and fabric technology, regular vacuuming and dusting can still ensure the material stays clean. You should also remember to try, as much as possible, to keep velvet out of direct sunlight. Velvet is prone to fading when exposed to the sun so try and position it in a way to prevent this from happening. If this is not possible, then you can always cover exposed areas with a throw or cushions.
FAQ
Acting quickly is key. Always try to remove as much of the stain as possible at the time. Do this by blotting any excess liquids or staining with a clean cloth. Do not rub as this will drive materials further into the pile and cause unsightly compressions in the fabric.
Once a week or every couple of weeks, clean the velvet sofa using the brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner. This will remove dust and dirt from the pile and help to keep your sofa looking better for longer.
As velvet furniture is usually on the darker end of the spectrum, they complement homes that have a cooler toned theme such as Scandinavian or classic vintage. On the other hand, the dark bold velvet colours contrast brightly toned colours such as red, green and blue, to make the room stand out in a burst of colour.
